Safety & Security

One of RTD’s core values is its commitment to creating a safe and responsible environment for our employees, our customers, and our community. Being a well-informed rider can greatly reduce the risk of injury to yourself or other passengers while riding the bus. Educating yourself and your family about safety and security aboard transit vehicles is important.

RTD buses are designed to be user-friendly, fast, convenient, and most importantly, safe. Did you know RTD vehicles may be equipped with onboard audio and video surveillance systems? RTD also collaborates with the Stockton Police Department and Security to ensure the safety of our employees and our customers.

General Safe Riding Tips

  • Tell a family member or friend your travel route. Call them when you arrive safely.
  • Have your exact fare or ticket ready.
  • Do not doze off or become distracted. It can make you an easy target. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep your purse, bags, backpack, and other belongings in your lap or between your feet. Do not leave them on an empty seat.
  • Be wary of noisy passengers arguing or causing a commotion. This could be an act to distract you while others try to steal your valuables.
  • If you feel threatened by other passengers, change your seat and alert the driver.
  • Avoid displaying cash, credit cards, or valuable items.
  • Notify the driver, police, or security of any unattended packages or luggage on the vehicle or at the stop.
  • In case of emergency, contact local authorities and alert the driver immediately.

Bus Stops and Transit Stations

  • Do not run near bus stops or transit stations.
  • Do not stand near the boarding platform edge or curb line. Please observe painted Safety Zones.
  • Listen for instructions on the overhead speaker system in the event an evacuation becomes necessary at the transit station.
  • Promptly leave the boarding platform after exiting the bus by using marked crosswalks.

Protect Your Phone
Cellphones, smartphones, and other electronic devices are great ways to use your time on board, but they can be attractive targets for thieves. These simple precautions can reduce your risk:

  • Be Alert — Most thefts are surprise grabs, with phones or other items taken from unsuspecting passengers who may be distracted.
  • Be Secure — Put your phone away when getting on and off transit vehicles. It’s a prime time for thieves to strike.
  • Be Aware — Public transit is a favorite venue for phone thefts due to the large number of passengers.

Suspicious Packages
Containers and devices come in all shapes, sizes, and smells. Always take your personal items with you when you exit the bus. If you find an unattended package, do not touch it. Immediately report it to your driver or call 911. A few things to look for regarding a suspicious package:

  • Unattended package
  • Bulky wrapping
  • Strange smells
  • Wires or ropes sticking out

Suspicious People
If you see someone suspicious, alert your driver and/or police, if they:

  • Act in a disorderly manner
  • Are alarming and disturbing others
  • Abandon a package and quickly exit the area
  • Carry a weapon, or if you suspect the person is carrying a weapon
  • Pace, appear nervous, or are jumpy
