Regional Transportation Center (RTC)

A centralized facility to consolidate the operations and maintenance functions of the RTD

The Regional Transportation Center (RTC) is a 136,000-square-foot centralized facility that consolidates the operations, maintenance, and administrative functions of the San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD).  The RTC was designed to support the growing transportation needs of San Joaquin County over the next 30 years.  The facility was completed November 2015, on time and under budget.  The project was funded by the Federal Transit Administration, Measure K (the half-cent sales tax dedicated to transportation projects in San Joaquin County), and the State of California Proposition 1B Program—putting tax dollars to work in a community that needed the work.

The RTC replaced an aging, overcrowded facility originally designed for a fleet of only 50 buses, less than half of RTD’s current fleet.  Prior to construction, RTD was hampered by operational issues associated with geographically separated facilities.  The RTC dramatically improves operational efficiency and safety, and provides the required capacity needed to expanded transportation services within San Joaquin County.  A Fuel and Wash Building accommodates servicing up to four buses simultaneously and supports brake and tire repair.  These improvements directly benefit RTD’s customers by lowering operating costs while also enabling RTD to provide cleaner, better-maintained buses even more efficiently.  In addition, the RTC was built to consume less energy, thereby reducing environmental impacts while supporting regional public transit services.  The RTC is a prime example of transit excellence through a collaborative partnership and can be a blueprint for constructing transit facilities for other agencies.
